Shocking statistics pertain in the world. In the UK alone at present we produce 27million tonnes of domestic landfill annually -that's half a tonne per man, woman and child every year ! This is made up of:

40% food waste
30% paper
20% packaging/cardboard
10% other

According to the Local Government Association (www.lga.gov.uk) within 9 years all landfill in the UK will be used up. With brownfield sites now earmarked for housing and green belt land protected, planning permission and local opposition may prevent any new landfill sites being created it is not good enough to be so thoughtless with our "waste" anymore. And that's just the domestic problem. If you have a car have you ever thought what happens when your garage says that you need to replace your car tyres ? Yes you shop around for the cheapest deal of course. Unscrupulous companies might resort to less than friendly methods of disposal of your old tyres. Next time check out their disposal policy. You may need to pay more. Of the 48million tyres scrapped 12 million end up in landfill (figures from Environment Agency) and the rest end up in various places. At least you can try to act by reducing the tyre problem.
