Taxi Safety

SAFE TRAVEL BY TAXI
This page has been compiled to aid those who are unaware of the risks when selecting this mode of  transport. TfL have recently updated their websites and we have accordingly but please let Webmaster know is you find any errors.

INSURANCE Only Black Taxis can be hailed in the street. Minicabs must always be booked through a licensed operator - otherwise you are not insured. It is a good idea to let someone else know when, where and how you travel especially at night.

BLACK TAXIS Your nearest can be booked by ringing the National Cabline:
0800 123 444

or you can use the directory of taxis and minicab numbers in the UK at:

This CabNumber service is also accessible using SMS or WAP on a mobile phone.
It is better to book in advance if you want to book at busy times eg after 11pm when many pubs start closing or during peak periods like Christmas or very early in the morning or if you want to travel a long distance or to an airport. For the cost and other details about this text message service, see:
MINI CABS (Licenced) Be sure to only book  licensed minicabs. You can check if a minicab company is licensed using this search tool:

Booking To find your nearest operator simply text the word HOME or home to 60835 (60tfl) and the phone numbers for two local licensed minicab operators will be sent to you. The service can be used in any part of London 24 hours a day.

Ensure It Is Your Minicab. Ask for the driver’s name and the make and colour of the vehicle that you will be picked up by. Minicab radios are not scrambled so others can listen to transmissions. When it arrives the driver should know your name but that is not fail safe. There should be a yellow diamond licensing sticker on its windscreen (see http://www.london.gov.uk/mayor/transport/minicabs/index.jsp).

OTHER CABS (Unlicenced ) If someone comes up to you and asks if you want a cab, do not accept. These drivers may be unscrupulous and not have insurance, so you may not be covered if there is an accident. Occasionally people are robbed or attacked by people who pretend to be cab drivers, so always be careful, especially if you are a woman travelling by yourself.

Don't put yourself at risk. Never use anything other than a black taxi, licensed minicab or night bus to get home.
